How To Cancel An Amtrak Ticket?

The steps are extremely simple and easy; whether you have an account or not, you can cancel the ticket through 

  1. If you have an account, open the ‘My Account’ tile visible at the top.

  2. You will see the ‘View/Edit’ option here; click it to see your reservations.

  3. Open the booking you wish to cancel. 

  4. Tap the ‘Cancel Trip’ button. Now follow the sequence of pop-ups and finish the process.

  5. Passengers who don’t have an account, click the ‘Modify Trip’ rectangle, enter the booking details and retrieve the train details. Then tap ‘Cancel Ticket’ and proceed as above.

There are other methods you can apply. You may call 1-800-872-7245 support center and ask them to help you or complete the cancellation for you. If you booked through an agency, ask your agency’s point of contact to cancel your ticket.

Amtrak Cancellation Policy

The Amtrak ticket cancellation policy is simple and short. Once you read these lines, you will understand what it means.

  1. Amtrak describes on the first page of its refund section that the refund amount depends on the type of the tickets, date when you cancel the ticket, and trip length you were due to cover. There are no fixed charges; the refund system will calculate the amount and give you the exact price.

  2. On average, the refund amount can go from 0% to 100%. Passengers can get a 100% refund if they cancel their ticket within 24-hours. This is applied to all ticket classes. 

  3. The Amtrak cancellation policy also shows leniency when you fall ill. When you produce a doctor’s prescription, Amtrak will waive the fee or try to accommodate you in future tickets. All the passengers due to travel with the sick person will also get fee waiver and accommodation services.

  4. If your ticket is non-refundable, you may be able to get the ticket fare back in the form of an e-voucher.

  5. If you don’t utilize every segment of your trip, the remaining segment’s fare will be subtracted from the total and refunded back to you.

Does Amtrak Charge A Cancellation Fee?

It does charge a cancellation fee, and this fee is dependent on the ticket type. The fee generally goes from $5 to $250. Consider the following  Amtrak cancellation fee policies to understand it. These are applied to the valid month.

  1. You pay 25% of the fare when you cancel in the valid month.

  2. You pay 75% of the ticket fare if you cancel between day 1 and day 10 of this month.  

  3. 100% value of ticket fare if you apply after the 11th day of the month.
